Ginger Cookies Gingerbread Men

Gingerbread menChristmas would simply not be Christmas without the delicious taste and the amazing look of Gingerbread men. Christmas cookies are typically eaten and used for decorations, and gingerbread cookies can be decorated to be festive holiday additions as well as wonderful taste treats. Cookie recipes are also versatile enough that you can use them, not just at holiday time, but any time of the year.

What list of country recipes would be complete without the inclusion of gingerbread cookies?

Ginger has some health benefits too, so if you’d like to enjoy a treat that is also a healthy dessert, try one of these spicy and fairly low sugar cookies. Don’t wait for Christmas to make Gingerbread men. They can make a great kids cooking session and give your kids something fun to do on summer vacation.

You Will Need:

* 1/2 cup shortening
* ½ cup brown sugar
* 2 tsp. ginger
* 1 tsp. cinnamon
* ¼ tsp. cloves or allspice
* 1½ tsp. salt
* 1 egg
* ¾ cup molasses
* 3 cups flour, sifted
* 1 tsp. soda
* ½ tsp. baking powder

How To Make It

Cream together shortening, brown sugar, spices and salt. Add the egg, mix thoroughly. Add molasses and blend. Sift together twice the flour, soda, baking powder and add to the molasses mixture. Stir well and chill. Roll out a fourth of the dough at a time, on floured board to a little more than ? inch thick. Cut with gingerbread man cutters or other shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheets in moderately hot (375-f) oven, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool before decorating.
