Apple Crumb Pie

Apple crumb pie recipes are as many as there are people who love them. Apple crumb pie is quite close to french apple pie recipes, with the added twist of just a bit more crumb topping on the top. Those who love apple crisp or apple crumble will be quite thrilled with this recipe for apple crumb pie.

Taken from an out-of-copyright Pennsylvania Dutch recipes book, the recipes for sweets tend toward a little extra sweetness so if you like a more tart apple pie recipe or apple crumble, cut down the sugar just a bit more and use it with a little lower sweet content. Nearly all Pennsylvania Dutch recipes are a little sweeter than necessary, so we’ve adjusted a few of them to allow for a lower sugar content.

* 6 tart apples
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1/2 cup butter
* 1 cup flour
* 1 tsp. cinnamon
* pastry for 9″ shell

Pare apples and cut into thick slices. Mix half the sugar with the cinnamon and sprinkle over apples. Put into unbaked pastry shell. Blend the flour, the remaining sugar and the butter and work into small crumbs, with your fingers. Sprinkle the crumbs over the apples. Bake in hot oven (425-f) for 10 minutes then reduce to moderate (350-f) and bake for 35 minutes more. Serve with cheese.
